At The Altar

I allow the tears to flow freely as my best friend says ‘goodbye’ to the disappointed and embarrassed guests. I should have known that Joey would leave me this way. We had been together for 10 years and he only proposed to me because I begged him to.

In the days leading up to the wedding he had been distant, quiet, and showing all of the signs of a man with cold feet, but I just ignored it. But I can’t allow this one bad day to keep me down. If this is how it will be from now on, if I have to start over alone, I have to come out of this better.

I need a glow-up, confidence, and a rebound or two, then all will be right.

“Hannah?” My best friend’s voice calls from the other side of the door. “Kaleb is looking for you.”

That name causes my heart to flutter and my face to redden in embarrassment. Kaleb is Joey’s best friend and also his best man.

“Let him in.”
